Jason Mandford took to Twitter after failing to book an appointment with a doctor. The frustrated 40-year-old claimed he was told to call back every morning at 8am in order to try to get a slot for a scan.

The stand-up comedian claimed it is not a “workable system” and was later inundated with messages from people who did not take kindly to his criticism of the NHS.

“This country!” he blasted, adding a red angry face to illustrate his feelings.

“Tried to book an urgent GP appointment for a scan (not for me) but you can’t get one!

“You just have to ring up every morning at 8am and hope to get one! [eye roll emoji] how is that a workable system?!” he asked his 387,300 followers.

Twitter user xoxsteviexox1 hit back: “There are no appointments because we don’t have enough GPs and other primary care staff. They do not want to do this job because of comments like this and those of your followers and the thousands of others jumping on this bandwagon.

“Yes, its s**t. They know this. They WANT to see you.

“It is not their choice not to see you (or whoever). Their hands are tied. And continuous bad press is just going to add to a horrific stressful situation for them as well as patients.”

“Please don’t join the others in s***ging off Primary Care services Jason,” the post continued.

“I literally mentioned the system not the individuals,” Jason replied.

A second user going by the handle LisaRowley120 also blasted the TV star.

“How can a high profile celebrity do this to the @NHS and his own GP practice?

“We work so hard and all we get is verbal and at times physical abuse. I’ll go to work today and we will get the backlash for this thanks a lot @JasonManford hope your proud of yourself.”(sic)

Jason shared the post on his account along with his reply: “At what point have I s***ged off any doctors or GP surgeries!? It’s the system that is f**ked!

“Patients and staff are on the same side! It needs fixing!”

Feeling a bit sorry for the television personality, user chartley2908 remarked: “Taking some stick here mate.”

“That’s Twitter for ya!” the father-of-six replied.

User SueGrant14 added: “The whole system is a joke! I’ve had the same treatment. Can’t see a Doctor, just send photograph and someone will call you. Why can’t GPs see patients when all other healthcare workers have worked face to face throughout the pandemic?”

Sharing a similar experience user MStephens1977 added: “Same with ours, you join a queue and there’s no appointments left. I drop in the fact I had brain surgery and that’s met with a ‘we can get you in at X o clock’.”

Jason went on to clarify his comments in a follow-up Facebook post, explaining he was criticising the “underfunded” system.

He said: “Clearly, as my parents are both NHS, my post is aimed at the system which is underfunded, mismanaged and unworkable. At no point have I had a go at medical staff, GPs or receptionists. Patients and staff are on the same side.

“They have constantly underfunded the NHS so that when we finally do go private you’ll be grateful to pay for your previously free appointments.

“I can see 99 per cent of people can see where I’m coming from but I know it’s an emotive subject and I would hate to have any people I’d respect feel like this was aimed at them. Cheers xx.”

Jason is currently on the road with his Like Me tour.

He is due in Chatham, Dudley, Colchester and Wimbledon this week, performing gigs which were rescheduled from earlier in the year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, the suited star was pictured with his arm in a sling as prepared for a show in Manchester.

Jason had undergone a shoulder operation a few days earlier.
