One of Coronation Street's original cast members, Ernst Walder, has died at the age of 94.
The actor played the role of Ivan Cheveski, who was the son-in-law of Elsie Tanner in the hit soap opera. He was also the boyfriend of the show's co-creator Tony Warren in the 1960s.
According to metro.co.uk, he passed away on Monday 6 September last year, but it was not known until now.
Former writer of the cobbles show Daran Little took to Twitter to share his sadness over the loss after it was reported on Coronation Street Blog.
Sharing a photo, he wrote: "Very sad to read of the passing of dearest Ernst Walder.
"An original C St cast member who quickly became Tony Warren's boyfriends before Tony caught him in bed with another cast member.
"Ernst used to send my sons chocolates every Christmas and was the loveliest man".
Fans of the programme also flocked to the social media site as one person shared: "Sad to read of the death of Ernst Walder, he played Ivan Cheveski in Coronation Street and was one of the original characters back in 1960. Extremely close to Pat Phoenix, he had so much charisma in those early years. Very sad to read of his passing."
While another said: "Ernst Walder R.I.P".
Ernst was born in November 1927 in Salzburg, Austria, and his acting career began back in 1958 when he played the role of policeman in The Safecracker.
Just two years later he joined the cast of Coronation Street for its second ever episode, where he played Ivan sporadically between the show's start until 1967.
