Emeli Sandé has admitted she struggled to ‘get out of the prisons in her mind’ before coming out – adding that it took her ‘a very long time’ to make the announcement.
The singer, 35, who revealed her relationship with girlfriend Yoana Karemova last month, gushed about her aspirations for the couple to start a family but confessed she’s conscious of her body clock.
Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, she went on to reveal that her parents Joel and Diane were ‘really happy’ for their daughter and have welcomed the pianist ‘into the family’.
Opening up: Emeli Sandé has admitted she struggled to ‘get out of the prisons in her mind’ before coming out – adding that it took her ‘a very long time’ to make the announcement
Emeli began: ‘Often the hardest part is getting out of the prisons in your mind, and I think to anybody that does feel scared – it’s a hard one because it really isn’t easy.
‘It took me a very long time, but just really trust that you are loved, and maybe not everybody is going to understand or accept that love, but you being yourself is what will make you powerful.
‘If you’re trying to be something that you’re not – you’ll never be able to fully enjoy life, so I think just for the joy of life, and I say to them, you are worthy of love and you are worthy of enjoying life, so don’t deny yourself that.’
She said of her parents: ‘When they see how in love I was, and that we really connected on such a deep level – intellectually, musically and through personalities – they were really happy.’

The Next To Me songstress then told how Yoana ‘truly understands’ her and how the pair have explored Emeli’s native Scotland.
‘We’ve had some really nice times up in Aberdeenshire. I’ve taken her around Alford, round Aberdeenshire hills so they’re happy for me that I’ve finally found someone who truly understands me and loves me. They’ve welcomed her into the family.’
While Emeli’s sister Lucy has ‘two beautiful children’ of her own, the BRIT Award winner claimed she has been ‘pushing at her career’ but now would ‘love to have a child’.
When asked if she feels conscious of your body clock, she replied: ‘Yes, of course. I love children, and my sister has two beautiful children and I’d love to have a child one day.

‘Again, it’s that balance – you want to get better at what you do, you want to keep pushing at your career, but at the same time, you are a woman and biology is real, so I’ll just see what happens.
‘If it naturally happens then fantastic, but if I’m supposed to dedicate myself to my music, then so be it, but hopefully one day we can start a family.
‘Same sex couples having children is so common now… Yes.’
Emeli recently admitted that their relationship isn’t always a fairy tale, as she detailed their unique method of arguing.
With both stars professional musicians, they settle their disagreements through the medium of music – passive aggressively playing loud music on separate pianos in separate rooms.
Happy: She said: ‘It took me a very long time, but just really trust that you are loved, and maybe not everybody is going to understand or accept that love, but you being yourself is what will make you powerful (pictured in May 2022)
She told the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden: ‘Sometimes we have a little musical argument without a word being thrown.
‘There’s a piano in the basement, there’s one upstairs, so it’s a full-on piano-off. She’s a classical pianist — she usually wins. But I get my point across.’
Emeli’s comments come after she revealed that she has ‘never felt a depth of love’ like the one she feels for Yoana.
The relationship comes after the hitmaker confirmed her divorce from marine biologist Adam Gouraguine in 2014, who she dated for more than a decade before exchanging vows in 2012.
Loved-up: The Next To Me songstress then told how Yoana ‘truly understands’ her and how the pair have explored Emeli’s native Scotland
Emeli told the Guardian’s G2 of her romance with Yoana: ‘I guess people made more of a story about it because I fell in love with a woman. But for me, being in love at this level, that’s the story. I’ve definitely never felt this depth of love’.
She went on to add that she feels ‘divided’ as she knows many people may not be in the position to be as open with their sexuality as she is.
Emeli explained of her feelings: ‘I definitely hope that I can help someone else feel the strength to do the same. But I probably need to get a bit more clued up.’
The Next To Me hitmaker went on to say: ‘All can do is answer on how I feel. I can exhale. I love music.
‘And you know, I love that there’s an album coming out – but I finally know that, beyond that, I can find happiness.’
Emeli revealed the relationship in sweet post to Instagram on April 2, confessing that her ‘soul mate’ had given her ‘the strength she needed’.
Posting a loved-up snap of the pair, the Next To Me singer wrote: ‘I’m so lucky to have found my soul mate Yoana, she’s such an extraordinary woman! Falling in love with her gave me the strength I needed!
‘Feels so good to be in love and I feel happier than ever. I’m deeply touched by all your messages of love and support. Thank you so much for your acceptance and kind wishes.
‘Feels like a huge weight has been lifted, here’s to a new beginning in truth and happiness,’ she concluded the caption.
