Thinking back to the ’50s, we can catch a glimpse of where rock ‘n roll truly began. It was an era where the first true kings of music got their start and showed us that music never has to be boring.

One of the most controversial and entertaining people to hit the stage was none other than rock legend, the “Killer” Jerry Lee Lewis. He has left the stage behind, causing many people to wonder if he has died.

Lewis’ most recent album is one from 2010 when he released his 40th studio album Mean Old Man. This also marked him as being in the music industry for more than 60 years. With so long between now and his last album, many people wonder if he is still thriving, alive, well, and performing his heart out.

The truth is today, Lewis is still alive and well. At 85, he stays home with his wife Judith, who he married in 2012. In 2019, Lewis had a serious stroke while at home in Nesbit, Mississippi. It caused mobility issues and some even felt that he may not survive it.

He overcame it, though. Recently, he even spent two days laying down tracks with Kenny Lovelace and James Burton, along with Lee Ann Womack and the McCrary Sisters.

Lewis joined Sun Studios as a studio musician and recorded his first single Crazy Arms in 1956. This song did well locally, but it wasn’t until one year later that he set the world on fire with Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On. It was a song that became a hit on pop, country, and R&B charts. This fun song also allowed him to truly express his fun-loving nature because he would play the piano while standing up and “shaking it”, which showed the world how much energy and enthusiasm he had.

His next single, Great Balls of Fire, further elevated his status as “The Killer”. It hit the charts in December 1957 and the following March released “Breathless,” which also became a hit. In 1958, Lewis released High School Confidential, which ultimately became his last hit song before his career in Rock ‘n’ Roll floundered.

This led to him turning to country music where he managed to make a new name for himself with songs like Another Place, Another Time, Olde Tyme Country Music, and Boogie Woogie Country Man.

Lewis is known by many as one of the Greats. He was a part of the rock ‘n roll era that set the bar for music as we know it today. He is a man that devoted his entire life to music. For this reason, he has received many accolades over the years. Rolling Stone has given him the title of one of the 100 Greatest Country Singers of All Time.

In 1986, Lewis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, though it was the release of the 1989 biopic Great Balls of Fire that brought fans back to his music. In the movie, Lewis was played by Dennis Quaid. He has been married a total of seven times and fathered six children, including the two that he and Myra had, Steve Allen Lewis and a daughter named Phoebe. Sadly, their son died at the age of three because he drowned.

Despite troubles with his career and his personal troubles, it is estimated that he has a net worth of around $10 million. For most people, this seems like quite an accomplishment for a lifetime’s love of music.
