Parkinson – You got this! Lidl advert

The Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger has made his most unexpected career move to date, taking up a role as a brand ambassador for Lidl.

The former Governor of California is promoting the stores Parkside tool range and has filmed a comedic advert to showcase the brand.

The 76-year-old Austrian re-enacts some legendary moments from his career in the clip including The Terminator and Kindergarten Cop.

And while he stops short of using his iconic catchphrase “I’ll be back”, he tries out a new phrase, “you got this”, which no doubt the brand is hoping will catch on.

Indeed, he even quoted it when speaking about the advert saying: “‘You got this’ – that’s exactly my attitude. You have to believe in yourself, that’s why I’m a Parksider.” (sic)

While the star lives a life of luxury these days he has worked as a bricklayer in the past, and therefore is all too familiar with the tools required for DIY and handiwork.

Shortly after he first came to the US in 1968, he set up a bricklaying business with his bodybuilding friend, Franco Columbu.

Fortuitously for the enterprising duo (although not for the people involved) there was big earthquake in Los Angeles at the time.

“The chimneys fell off the apartment houses and all this stuff. Franco and I were busy for two years rebuilding chimneys and fireplaces and patios and walls,” he recalled in an April 2000 interview.

Indeed, his business acumen was such that he was already a millionaire before he ever appeared on screens, which he revealed in his recent Netflix documentary.

In the hilarious promo Arnold says: “I’m here to talk about my tools for success. Everything I have ever built was because I had the power in the palm of my hands. Just like you! He is then seen throwing a drill into the hands of a young man before the scene changes to a playground where the star speaks to a group of children, reminisent of his role in Kindergarten Cop.

“I was not afraid to fail, to think outside the box. I built a new box,” he continues. He is then seen in a work room telling a man who is welding: “A plan is only as great as the tools you use to execute it.”

The former Mr. Olympia is then seen sculpting wood on a suburban street as an elderly lady watches on as he tells her: “Success means having the power to do it yourself.”

The camera then pans out to reveal he has sawed the wood into the shape of himself posing on the Mr. Olympia stage as he jokes: “The muscles scare the birds.”

The advert ends with Arnold helping the young man from the start of the ad complete a bench press, saying: “Now let’s build another bench, ok come on!”
