No matter your hair length, type and tone, there’s a new cut out there for you.
In 2022 cuts are getting bolder, edgier and in some cases, more glam.
After two years of low-maintenance hair, some will want to continue that trend and opt for laidback looks, while others will be keen to refresh their vibe with bouncy old school glamour lengths.
We’ve spoken to three hair industry leaders to find out what they predict will be big over the next 11 months.
Get cutting.
Curly lob
This will be a huge trend for 2022.
Ricky Walters from Soho’s Salon64 says: ‘For years, girls with curls have had only two options.
‘Super long curly hair often thrown into a bun, or the classic curly bob.
‘Collar bone lengths were only reserved for those with straighter hair – until now.
‘Using a freehand technique and cut visually with tons of layers and shorter pieces nearer the crown while retaining length around the collar bone, means those with a serious case of the ringlets can enjoy a mid length hair cut with max volume and attitude.
‘2022 is all about statement hair that makes noise and turns heads. Nothing does it better than the curly lobb.
‘Our Moisture Shampoo will help keep curls soft and strong too.’
Adam Reed, UK Editorial Ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel adds: ‘This cut is timeless for curls and coils and will be popular throughout 2022.
‘A mid-length lob with a triangular silhouette is a beautiful way to showcase curls and allow them to frame the face.
‘Combine a lob with a cascading fringe to help showcase curl pattern and allow for plenty of styling options.’
Boyfriend bob
Keep the edge blunt.
Adam tells us: ‘One of the biggest haircuts we will be seeing in 2022 is the blunt, boyfriend bob.
‘This cut is a square outlined, shorter blockier bob that gives a more relaxed and oversized fit.
‘This look is super versatile and can be adjusted to be dressed up or down. Straighten and smooth to create a sharp, glossy look or add waves and volume to create a messy or tousled look.
‘I recommend using L’Oréal Professionnel Steampod 3.0 with Mythic Oil to create a sleek look.’
The Shag
The Shag has been a mainstay the whole pandemic.
Adam says: ‘The Shag, or the Shoreditch Shag which is my version of this look, is one of my all-time favourite suggestions for clients as it is a low maintenance look that embraces natural hair texture.
‘It can be personalised to suit each individual and the cut continues to evolve as hair grows.
‘There are endless possibilities to personalise this look as it is easy to style, it can blow dried to add bouncy volume or you could add raw texture with a product like L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Super dust.’
Curtain bangs
Curtain bangs will continue to be popular throughout 2022, according to Adam.
‘They are the perfect nod to the 90s and with simple adjustments they can suit every face shape and hair type.
‘Add volume and texture with L’Oréal Professionnel Volumetry Spray and Tecni.Art PLI before blow-drying hair to add angles to the face and create a sweeping effortless look.
‘Curtain bangs are incredibly easy to maintain and can be styled to elongate and shape the face.
‘I recommend this cut to those looking to add volume or frame their face.’
2022 hair colour trends
Hair colour expert and Wella ambassador, Zoe Irwin says two colours will become more in demand over the year.
Nude cashmere blonde
Zoe says: ‘The rise in this trend is linked to the explosion of luxe loungewear in the past 12 months – with the rise of loungewear in luxury fabrics like cashmere, we want our hair to match.
‘I see this as a palette of muted creamy, tan blonde and sanded coral shades where, a bit like an eye-shadow palette, one shade melts seamlessly into another without a stark contrast, creating a restorative feel.
‘As well as being suited to the luxe-lounge wear we are now wearing, this trend works well with the ‘off-tones’ and dominant colours we are seeing coming through fashion such as green.
‘Ask your stylist to add soft contrasting accent colours in warm and cool tones to create a delicate dimension to the hair.’
If you’re looking to add shine and a tonal refresh to blonde hair, Wella Professionals is launching a new in-salon glazing service in March called Shinefinity.
Spiced cinnamon red
Zoe says: ‘We are going to see the return to a very earthy red tone, an auburn colour but it’s more like a Renaissance Red because it’s a softened red and much more of a golden tone and not hyperpigmented.
‘A lot of models are embracing it, along with the fashion crowd (Gigi Hadid wore it at the Met Gala in 2021).
‘It works really well with the seasonal tones, and feels like something fresh, uplifting, and optimistic, and when the copper and red tones become more golden based, it makes them extremely flattering for many skin tones so it’s a shade that can become very wearable.
‘The thing I love about this colour is the way you can refresh it at home. The new Wella Professionals Color Fresh Mask has a gorgeous palette of shades, and there are two I would recommend, Red or Copper Glow.’
Long blowouts
Simple trims finished with a bouncy glam blowout will popular after two years of lower-maintenance hair.
Ricky says: ‘For a while we have seen the classic beachy waves with an undone boho feel.
‘But big blow fires are coming back, still using a strong but more polished wave and adding volume the once big hair is making a comeback.
‘After spending the last few years battling the pandemic with most red carpet and events cancelled you never know when you will be able to dress up next.
‘2022 is the year of glam hair and showing off.’
Pixie cut
Adam says: ‘I’m really excited for more dramatic and daring cuts in 2022 that show off individual style.
‘A pixie cut is already a popular cut but this year we will see it evolve to be an even bolder look.
‘Ask your stylist for it to be longer on the top and shorter at the sides to create a more flattering look.
‘Add an undercut, bold highlights or bangs to switch up this cut.
‘Make sure you have a thorough conversation with your stylist before your appointment to make sure your cut is perfectly tailored to your face shape and hair type.’
