Why is McDonald’s ice cream machine broken AGAIN? Former staff reveal the REAL reason you can’t get a McFlurry
- An ex-McDonald’s manager says cleaning the ice cream machines takes hours
- Staff members confirm this as the reason why the machines are always ‘broken’
- Employees will begin to clean the machines and tell customers it is ‘out of order’
The worst kind of summer disappointment is being told the McDonald’s ice cream machine is out-of-order when you’re craving a McFlurry.
And the McD’s worker’s sympathetic shrug offers little comfort as the beads of sweat dry on your forehead under the cooling breath of the air conditioner.
You are anything but ‘Lovin’ it’ right now.
The all-too familiar encounter is a running theme on Twitter, according to a recent study that revealed out-of-order ice cream machines are the most common complaint among users of the social media platform – surpassing moans and groans about ‘poor employee attitude’.
Some fast food fans even believe that McDonald’s staff lie about the machines being down because they don’t have the time to clean them.
Being told the McDonald’s Ice Cream Machine is out of order is a global frustration – but employees have revealed the machines are rarely broken and just take forever to clean
And that is not far from the truth, according to former McDonald’s employees who have revealed the real reason they can’t give you your beloved frozen dessert.
Former manager Sarah Vaught, from Illinois, US, told the Wall Street Journal the main reason is that the McDonald’s ice cream machines take forever to clean.
The McFlurry machine requires a four-hour automated heat clean every night to get rid of any bacteria inside the machines.
To get the machines ready for cleaning, McDonald’s staff will have to remove and wash seven parts with a sanitising mix.
To complete the tiresome chore, staff will often begin breaking the machine down before the venue has closed – and will tell hungry customers that the machine is broken instead.
Previous Mcdonald’s employees took to Twitter to confirm Sarah’s claim.
@MichaelZyzzi said: ‘As an ex McDonald’s employee, the ice cream machine was always working it just took too long to clean it so we used to tell everyone it was broken hahaha.’
In response to the tweet, one user asked: ‘I don’t understand why you couldn’t say it’s being cleaned or maintenanced.’
A former employee, Courtney Bunting, said: ‘Everything about the machine is just miserable.

‘If someone came in 30 minutes before closing and ordered a McFlurry, would you want to risk something else splattering all over the area you just wiped?’
She said: ‘We’ve all been victimised by the ice cream machine.’
To complicate the matter, the machines are prone to breakdowns and one in four branches reportedly told fast food consultant Richard Adams that their kit was out of order.
One McDonald’s employee shared on Reddit that in the year and a half they worked at the chain, the ice cream machine has only truly been down one time, but they can’t sell many McFlurry’s because they are always cleaning it.
In 2019, McDonald’s told the Mirror that machines are cleaned every 24 hours and apologised for any inconvenience.
It comes as the fast-food chain introduces six new items to its menu, including a Lotus Biscoff McFlurry- but whether hungry customers can get their hands on it is a different story.
