Snake plants are attractive houseplants that are easy to care for because they can tolerate low light and drought conditions.

Snake plants, also known as Dracaena trifasciata, are evergreen plants that can grow to be between six inches and 12 feet in height.

These popular plants are one of the easiest indoor plants to maintain and can last for years if cared for properly.

With this in mind, Patty Willems, PR Manager of sustainable plant pot company, elho has shared exclusively with Express.co.uk how to make snake plants “grow stronger” in the winter months.

She said: “Snake plants, St George’s sword, or Mother-in-Law’s tongue – whichever of the many names you know it as – is a common and popular houseplant due to its hardiness and resilience.

“The plant is native to West Africa so it does prefer warmer conditions, but they are very adaptable.

“That being said, we recommend keeping the home above 16C to keep it happiest.

“These plants are drought-resistant and require very little watering, particularly during the winter, so it is important to check the soil is completely dry before giving them a drink to prevent overwatering.

“It’s also important to keep the leaves dust-free to encourage photosynthesis by giving them a gentle wipe with a dry cloth every couple of weeks.

“Bright light isn’t essential for snake plants and they will tolerate shady corners, but increased light levels will help them grow stronger throughout the winter when daylight is minimal.”

While snake plants are easy to look after and care for, they are susceptible to several common pests such as spider mites and aphids.

Most houseplant pests can be treated by removing them by hand or by spraying them with water.

Some houseplant pests can also be removed and treated with neem oil.

The most common problems snake plants encounter are root rot and fungal infections which can be caused by overwatering.
