George and Amal Clooney just celebrated nine years of marriage and they are happier than ever — in spite of the naysayers and recent speculation to the contrary.
George, 62, and Amal, 45, were the stars of the show on Thursday at the 2nd annual Albie Awards in New York City, organized through the Clooney Foundation for Justice. The couple posed on the carpet at the black tie ceremony in looks fit for a wedding.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, George joked that he was defying expectations by making it to nine years with his human rights lawyer wife. “She inspires me in everything she does,” the Gravity actor while smiling lovingly at his wife. “And by the way, yesterday was our 9th anniversary!”
“Said it wouldn’t last, you know what I’m saying?” George added jokingly, telling the interviewer, “In fact, you literally said that! She said it.”
In recent weeks, George and Amal have laid speculation about their marriage to rest after reports claimed the two were on the rocks.
“They had a rough time during lockdown, cooped up together for months,” a source told the National Enquirer. The source alleged that George’s “partying and immaturity” clashed with Amal’s “controlling tendencies.”
“Last year they took time apart to focus on their own projects and now they’re more in love than when they first got married,” the insider added. However, it looks like these two, who share six-year-old twins, are doing just fine. The couple are reportedly planning to renew their wedding vows.
Speaking on the gala, that honors courageous defenders of justice, Amal said, “We hope to do it every year and it’s really an honor to be able to put on a stage tonight five amazing people. Many of whom we worked with in Ukraine and Congo and Syria, and places that still, you know, sometimes seem to be forgotten.”
“They’re people who are really making a difference and it’s amazing to be able to honor them tonight,” Amal shared. “We’re lucky that we get to focus a lot of the attention we get on people that need attention. ‘Cause we don’t. So, it’s fun to be able to. Especially tonight,” George said.
