Known as The Crystal, it is expected to become the highest sky bridge in the world.

The 250 metre bridge is part of Raffles City Chongqing, a complex made up of eight skyscrapers in the Yuzhong district of Chongqing City.

The Crystal will be sprawled across the top of four 60-storey skyscrapers, 820 feet in the air.

Within the glass conservatory bridge will be a viewing deck, infinity pool and sky walk as well as a number of food establishments.

At night, it will turn into a giant light beam to perform a light show above the city.

CapitaLand president Lucas Loh confirmed the next step is "transplanting trees" to the sky bridge as part of the interior, now that the structure is nearing completion after six years of building work.

The man behind the design of Raffles City Chongqing is Canadian-Israeli architect Moshe Safdie, who also created the famous Marina Bay Sands in Singapore and Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem.

The slightly curved buildings that support The Crystal are meant to replicate a sail on a boat, harking back Chongqing's trading heritage, which used the Yangtze and Jialing rivers for transport vessels.

The complex not only features 1,400 apartments, but also a 230,000 square metre shopping centre with 420 retail stores, as well as a number of offices and a luxury hotel.

It will also be a major transport hub with links to the subway, bus and ferry terminal and cruise port.

With a Six Flags park also opening in Chongqing next year, tourism is expected to grow even more with a 14 per cent increase of visitors to Chongqing in 2016, according to CNN.

China built more skyscrapers last year than any other country has before, with 88 constructed in 2018.

This compares to the US, which came in second place, with just 13 skyscrapers built last year.

London is to add another skyscraper to the skyline called The Tulip which will become the second tallest building in the city behind The Shard, measuring 305 metres tall.

It is due to open in 2025.

Three other skyscrapers to open in the capital by 2026 include Can of Ham, The Scalpel and Undershaft.
