Never-before-seen pictures give a sneak peek of the eagerly-awaited Super Nintendo World – and February 4, 2021, is announced as the date for the grand opening

A date for the opening of the long-awaited Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan has finally been announced – and it’s February 4, 2021, when guests will enter it for the first time.
What’s more, brand new pictures – some renderings, others taken inside – reveal some of the attractions that visitors will enjoy.
The exciting images show the grand Bowser’s Castle as well the world’s first-ever interactive Mario Kart ride at the Osaka theme park. There’s also a never-before-seen stunning aerial view of the colourful land.

According to Universal Studios Japan, Super Nintendo World will be an ‘immersive land featuring Nintendo’s legendary worlds, characters and adventures where guests will be able to play inside their favourite Nintendo games’.
It described Bowser’s Castle as having a ‘mysterious atmosphere with stone walls, spiked fences and heavy iron doors along with a massive stone statue of Bowser at the centre of a grand staircase’.
Inside the castle is where guests will find the Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge ride, which will see guests ‘race through the iconic courses of Mario Kart with their favourite Nintendo characters and be transported into Nintendo worlds where they’re not just playing the game, they’re actually being immersed in the game’.
Universal Studios revealed that guests will ‘steer into the Mushroom Kingdom and throw shells as they race to the finish line with Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach’, while wearing augmented reality headsets.

Bowser poses for the cameras as the park gears up to accept its first guests
Thomas Geraghty, senior director of innovation and global executive producer for Mario Kart, said: ‘At the heart of the castle lies the world’s first-ever Mario Kart theme park ride based on the Mario Kart series of games, which have sold over 150million units.
‘Universal Creative has partnered with Nintendo to bring a real-life racing adventure to Universal Studios Japan with Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge. Guests will put on their headset which takes them through the Mario Kart universe to experience never-ending excitement and thrills.’
It was also announced that another ride, Yoshi’s Adventure, will see visitors ‘climb atop’ the green dinosaur and ‘follow Captain Toad on a treasure hunting adventure’.
Universal added: ‘Guests need to find the three coloured eggs that lead the way to the Golden Egg that Captain Toad was seeking.

‘Guests will encounter a spectacular view of the Mushroom Kingdom from Mount Beanpole while having fun on this ride that’s perfect for the whole family.’
In addition, as previously reported, visitors will be able to purchase and wear wristbands, called Power Up Bands, which connect to smartphones, and allow them to collect digital coins, just like Mario does in the Nintendo games.
As they explore the theme park, they can compete with others in ‘fun and friendly competitions’ in a bid to collect coins, stamps and keys.
In one of these competitions, Universal said guests will ‘try to retrieve the golden mushroom that Bowser Jr has stolen’ and that they must ‘work their way through the games located throughout the area to collect three keys’.
It added: ‘Waiting for you is a dramatic boss battle with Bowser Jr. Jump, punch and use your entire body and all of your instincts to win.’
Super Nintendo World had been scheduled to open in July 2020 ahead of the Tokyo Olympics but was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic along with the Games, which will now be held next summer.

Japan’s borders have been closed to almost all foreign tourists for months, with no plan yet announced to ease these restrictions.
The Nintendo-Universal partnership was first unveiled in November 2016.
Three more parks from the collaboration are set to open at Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Singapore.
