The crew and passengers of an American Airlines flight bound for New York got a scare and an unexpected trip to Phoenix on Wednesday.
American Airlines spokesperson Ross Feinstein confirmed to USA TODAY that a mechanical issue in the front galley of the Airbus 321 forced Flight AA10 to land at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport around 11:26 p.m. PST, a little over 90 minutes after taking off from Los Angeles’ LAX.
Passenger Terron Austin documented the incident on his Twitter account.
“So…we’re having an emergency landing in #Phoenix on my 9PM PST flight from #LA to #NYC. Sudden burst of smoke followed by an announcement to immediately prepare for landing. We weren’t even two hours in the air yet. Flight 10 on @AmericanAir.”
