Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry leaving the British royal family changed The Firm forever. For generations, the royals were known for being steady forces in their positions despite any personal feelings that they might have. In the past, royals like the late Princess Diana and the late Princess Margaret have been candid about the unhappiness they felt in their lives, but they mostly adhered to the royals’ “stiff upper lip” policy.

However, with Meghan and Prince Harry’s shocking exit, royals have come to realize that there is a way to take control of their lives. Living life on your own terms, even if it goes against tradition, is a possibility. Still, it didn’t have to come to this for the Sussexes.

As someone who has been in the royal fold for the entirety of his life, Prince Charles foresaw that the duchess would have some issues adjusting. In fact, it appears that he may regret not doing more to help her.

Prince Charles knew Meghan Markle would struggle in the British royal family

From the moment he was introduced to his daughter-in-law, Prince Charles was highly impressed with Meghan. He has his own special nickname for her, “Tungsten” because of her strength and backbone. Seeing Meghan’s charm, wit, and drive, Prince Charles foresaw some of the issues that she would encounter as a senior working member of the British royal family.

“I think [Prince Charles] likes strong women, but in The Firm, there is only room for one Queen,” royal expert Nigel Cawthorne told The Sun. “I think he foresaw considerable problems ahead for The Firm. Harry and Meghan amplified the popularity of the royal family in the way that Prince Andrew and Fergie did at the time.”

Prince Charles struggled with how to help and support Prince Harry Meghan Markle

Though he was aware of many of the issues the Sussexes encountered before they escalated, Prince Charles struggled with helping his son and daughter-in-law navigate the challenges that they faced.

Since the royal family is so steeped in tradition, he felt it was not his place to usurp Queen Elizabeth II’s policies and protocols. After all, he along with many other royals have struggled in the royal spotlight and had to learn to adjust.

“Charles genuinely made an attempt to support what Harry and Meghan were looking for as long as it wouldn’t upset other HRH’s,” Cawthorne explained. “In truth, however, there wasn’t a lot he could do apart from offering moral support.”

Prince Charles has huge regrets about Megxit

In the end, when Meghan and Prince Harry announced Megxit, the Prince of Wales did his best to help mediate the conversations between the young couple, himself, the queen, and Prince William. However, he might have deep regrets about remaining silent for so long.

“He no doubt personally regrets the fact that he won’t see his son and family as much as he otherwise would have,” Cawthorne said. “He likes tradition and order.”

Still, allowing the Sussexes to embark on their own path may have saved their relationship with the royal family.
