Pete Buttigieg may have no problem giving speeches in front of huge crowds, but he confessed the fashion set still puts him on edge.
At this year’s God’s Love We Deliver Golden Heart Awards ceremony on Monday night in New York City, the presidential hopeful was honored along with Iman and MAC Viva Glam’s John Demsey.
“This room gives me more fashion anxiety than usual,” the Democratic primary candidate confessed. “I try and keep it simple.”
Guests at the star-studded affair included Lupita Nyong’o, Tiffany Haddish, Marisa Tomei and Michael Kors.
Perhaps Buttigieg could have assuaged some of that anxiety had he taken Tom Ford up on his offer to style him.
In a Vogue profile from August, Ford told the magazine that he met the South Bend Mayor at a lunch and “picked up on something: At the table, on the stage, Buttigieg, for all his silken rhetoric, seemed to look smaller than he was due to the generous cut of his suit.”
Ford texted the politician’s husband, Chasten, and “offered a bit of sartorial guidance … They didn’t bite.”
The fashion designer was understanding of Buttigieg’s reticence, however, admitting that his clothes are “too expensive … They’re not made in America,” even if they would relieve some of that sartorial stress.
