When Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Pince Harry announced they would be resigning from their roles as senior working members of the British royal family in January 2020, royal fans were stunned. It was no secret that the pair hadn’t exactly had a seamless experience in the public eye.
The Duke of Sussex had released multiple statements about the press’ obsession with his wife. Likewise, the pair decided to sue several tabloids for invading their privacy. In the October 2019 ITV documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, they were uncharacteristically candid about living life in a fishbowl. They warned that if things did not change, they would leave it all behind.
Now, sources are saying that Megxit was not a spur of the moment idea. In fact, it appears that the Sussexes had a deep discussion about Megxit before they even got married.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are very happy in LA
When the Sussexes moved to Meghan’s hometown of LA, they hoped to launch their new Archewell Foundation and begin their new careers with their powerhouse Hollywood team by their side. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has halted all of their plans.
Though the transition has been challenging, especially for Prince Harry who is so very afar from home, the Sussexes are reportedly extremely happy.
“Two years in, they’re still very much in love,” royal expert Kate Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight. “So much has happened for Meghan and Harry, but I’m told by a source very close to them that all of the experiences, the challenges, the obstacles of 2019 and 2020, have really made them even closer. They’ve always been a great team and a partnership and you’ve seen that when you’re with them. But they were described as hand in glove, and that idea that really one just fits the other beautifully and they complement each other, they work well together, and I think looking back on what’s clearly been a challenging and a testing year, the one thing that just hasn’t faltered is their commitment to each other and their love for one another. They’ve done this together as a couple and I think it’s important to remember that.”

Prince Harry had been unhappy as a senior working royal for several years
Well before he met Meghan, Prince Harry was reportedly very unhappy as a senior member of the British royal family. Though he and Prince William have always been close, after the Duke of Cambridge wed Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, there was little room for Prince Harry.
He has also been resentful of the press, especially considering the way his mother, Princess Diana tragically died. “For most, all of my life, I’ve always been part of a family and part of a country that is scared of the tabloid media because they have so much power and influence and no morals (laughs),” Prince Harry explained in a leaked phone call. “From the moment that I found a wife that was strong enough to be able to stand up for what we believe in together, has basically scared them so much that they’ve now come out incredibly angry, they’ve come out fighting, and all they will try and do now is try and destroy our reputation and try and, you know, sink us.”
In fact, it appears that the prince had been considering an exit for some years. “The truth is Harry had been unhappy for a long, long time,” a source told The Sun. “He wanted to move in the direction that they did and had been considering it for more than a year. Meghan supported Harry’s decision. But there was more than one occasion where she asked him if he was certain it was what he wanted. And she always made it clear she would support him in whatever he did.”

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had a major discussion about Megxit before they got married
When they started getting serious, even before they tied the knot, the Sussexes had a major discussion about Megxit. “‘The seeds of Megxit were sown before they even got married,” an insider told The Sun. “The truth is that Harry had been deeply unhappy for a long time. And he and Meghan openly discussed going in a different direction well before they got married.”
Though Meghan was reportedly willing to see how things went, as things got worse for her, the prince ultimately pulled the plug on their royal life. “The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,” Prince Harry said during a dinner for his charity, Sentebale. “It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always got it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.”
Apparently, the forthcoming book, Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of A Modern Royal Family will go into great detail about Megxit.
