A lucky couple who scooped £1million on the EuroMillions have been named – and they’ve revealed how they put their celebrations on hold until their baby was born.

Andrew Symes and Natalie Metcalf, from Thornbury, Gloucestershire, were delighted to win the National Lottery’s UK Millionaire Maker prize on Friday February 1.

But they put the champagne on ice until after their daughter was born just four days later.

They realised they had won the day after the draw, and Natalie, 37, started experiencing labour pains while they were looking around houses on the Sunday.

When they found out they had won, the couple had just sold a pushchair used by their two-year-old son, and Natalie was joking that they were rich.

She said: “It’s so funny to think of now, but the couple who’d bought our pushchair had paid in cash and I was dancing around the living room singing, ‘We’re rich, we’re rich!’, when Andy turned to me and said, very seriously, ‘Yes, yes, you are!’ and made me check the ticket.

“We just couldn’t believe it. We downloaded the National Lottery app and scanned the ticket to double-check and that said we’d won too.

"We just didn’t know what to do though, so Andy ended up going to Tesco where he’d bought the ticket and they told him to call Camelot.”

Now the baby is healthy and thriving and the winners, from Bristol, are finally planning to spend their cash.

The lucky winners intend to splash the cash on their dream wedding and a perfect family home.

Andy said: “I came home and phoned Camelot straight away and they confirmed that we definitely had won £1M and that a Winners’ Advisor would come and see us to pay out the money at 11am on Tuesday, although as it turned out, our baby was born at 10am on Tuesday!”

Natalie said: “We’d always joked that the only way we could ever afford to buy our own home was if we won the lottery. We didn’t know that that would prove to be true!

“As well as the house, we’re also going to start planning our wedding. We’ve been engaged for over two years but now we can afford to have the wedding of our dreams without feeling guilty about the costs.

“This win really will help us make all our dreams come true.”

Andrew added: “This win couldn’t have come at a better time. We have our beautiful children and now we can get married and buy a perfect house to raise them in.

"As well as feeling so happy about the safe arrival of our baby girl, we just feel so relaxed. We’ll be able to buy a home and not even have to worry about a mortgage. To not have to think about that additional cost every month is almost a second windfall in itself.”
