Even though Shannon Purser is not the Riverdale character she plays, some people have a hard time understanding that and have taken to harassing the poor girl on Twitter. Thankfully, though, Shannon isn’t afraid to stick up for herself and she also has co-star Lili Reinhart on her side.

If you’re not caught up on Riverdale and don’t want to be slapped with some very mild spoilers, abort mission and hop out of this post right now.

Cool, glad you’re still with me. In last week’s episode, Shannon’s character, Ethel, and Cole Sprouse’s character, Jughead, were playing a game of Griffins and Gargoyles so Jughead could secure the rulebook to solve a murder mystery. Ethel tricked Jughead into thinking the only way he could get this rulebook was to drink some blue liquid and kiss her. This is where the Twitter drama began.

The Twitter trolls proceeded to attack Shannon, calling her “fat” and “ugly” simply because her *CHARACTER* kissed Jughead, who dates Betty Cooper, who is played by Cole’s IRL girlfriend Lili. It sounds confusing but you know what I’m talking about.

When the trolls first started to come after Shannon, she reportedly tweeted a meme of an exhausted Spongebob and wrote, “All the stans who finally feel comfortable calling me fat/ugly now that Ethel has interfered with their ship.”

She also gave them a reminder that she is not Ethel:

TBH, Shannon handled that like a pro.

Fast forward to today when Lili hopped into the fray, tweeting, “Shannon is my friend, and it is embarrassing that people felt the need to attack her personally for something that happened on a SHOW.”

Adding to that. Shannon is my friend, and it is embarrassing that people felt the need to attack her personally for something that happened on a SHOW. Written by WRITERS. You are not a fan of mine if you treat my friend like this. https://t.co/Yu7aEIGHyk

Lili also made the important observation that Shannon didn’t just go up to Cole on set and kiss him—this was written into the script. Then she ended her boss tweet with, “You are not a fan of mine if you treat my friend like this.”

Lili’s tweet attracted a bunch of support from Riverdale fans who seconded pretty much everything she said.

i will never understand why people hate on the actual actress/actor,if someone doesnt like what they do as there character, there just playing a character who’s doing there job for entertainment/a show. They shouldn’t hate on the person, Its horrible x

I seriously don’t understand people who do this. It’s like when Toni kissed Jughead and Vanessa got death treats. This is a FICTIONAL show. The actors DON’T write the show WRITERS WRITE the show.

Hopefully that message got through to their fans, but if not, surely Shannon and Lili will hold everyone accountable like they always do.
