She’s a year older than me but we’ve always been friends. She went off to university in London last year and I didn’t see her for months.

Then she dropped out of her course and came home.

We’re still friends but my life has moved on.

I’m working long hours and when I’m not at work I want to be with my boyfriend and catch up on sleep.

My friend says I’ve ditched her. I value our friendship and hope we can get back on track.

DEIDRE SAYS: Friendships change as we take on commitments and make new connections in life. Of course, something must give.

Her life changed when she went to uni. It sounds like she’s lost her direction and is feeling at sea, but don’t let her make you feel guilty for seeing your boyfriend. Tell her that you value her and still want to see her whenever you can.
