DEAR DEIDRE: I STRUGGLE to sleep but my doctor won’t give me sleeping pills because I’m only 15.
I don’t really worry about things but I do have exams coming up, so I’m not sure if this is a contributory factor.
I buy antihistamine tablets as these make me drowsy.
They worked at first but now they don’t give me the same effects.
I go to bed at about 10pm but I can still be awake at 2am.
I have read that sleep hygiene might help, but I don’t know anything about it.
DEIDRE SAYS: Sleep hygiene involves no napping during the day, and avoiding caffeine, spicy or fatty foods and carbonated drinks.
It also helps to keep electronics and mobile phones out of the bedroom.
Have a warm bath before bedtime and make sure your room is cool. Try reading in bed to take your mind off any worries. My e-leaflet on Solving Sleep Problems explains more.
