The hidden meaning behind THAT hat! Fergie reveals her ‘Argentine style’ headgear at Eugenie’s wedding was a nod to her late mother – and says she didn’t mind the golden snitch jokes

  • Fergie, 59, admitted she hadn’t realised hat’s resemblance to golden snitch

Fergie has revealed that her unusual choice of hat at daughter Princess Eugenie’s wedding was an ‘Argentine style’ in honour of her mother.

The Duchess of York’s wore a wide-brimmed hat by Jess Collett, featuring two straw ‘wings’ coming out of the side – leading to comparisons with the golden snitch from Harry Potter.

Fergie, 59, said she didn’t mind the jokes as she ‘loves the golden snitch’ when questioned about her eye-catching headgear, but admitted she ‘hadn’t realised’ the resemblance at the time.

Prince Andrew’s ex-wife said that she had wanted the ‘Argentine look’ to pay tribute to her mother Susan Barrantes.

Fergie revealed on GMB today (above) that her unusual choice of hat at daughter Princess Eugenie’s wedding was an ‘Argentine style’ in honour of her mother

Susan had caused a stir after eloping to Argentina with a professional polo player when Fergie was a child. She later died in a car accident in Buenos Aires at the age of 61.

Speaking on GMB, Fergie said: ‘We love the golden snitch. I actually hadn’t realised that until afterwards.

‘There’s always something I do.  I sort wanted that Spanish style for mum again, that Argentine look.’

Following her appearance at Eugenie’s wedding last months, Fergie’s attracted a flood of comments on social media – with many comparing it to a ‘golden snitch’ from Harry Potter – a winged, flying ball used in the wizard game of quidditch.

Fergie (pictured outside St George’s Chapel with Beatrice last month) explained how she used the same vintage Manolo Blahnik bag that her mother carried at her and Prince Andrew’s wedding in 1986

One posted on Twitter: ‘Yes, Fergie is wearing Harry Potter’s Golden Snitch on her hat. This is going to get me through the day.’

Another added: ‘Fergie has just arrived, secret Harry Potter fan? Andrew catch that snitch.’

On GMB this morning, the Duchess also explained how she chose a green dress, by Emma Louise Design, in another tribute to her mother.

She decided to use the same vintage Manolo Blahnik bag that her mother carried at her and Prince Andrew’s wedding in 1986, discovering that the green admission tickets to the big day were still inside.

Fergie said she decided to match the colour of the tickets by choosing to wear green to watch her daughter Eugenie marry.
