Food recalls aren't that 'common' says expert in 2020

Food recalls are issued when there is a health and safety issue, such as an undeclared ingredient which could cause harm to an individual if consumed. Usually, a company will warn customers of the issue, before offering them the necessary advice.
Co-op is recalling its Spaghetti Rings in Tomato Sauce because it contains celery which is not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to celery.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has shared the recall on its website and offered its advice to consumers.
The spaghetti hoops come in a pack 385g in size, which has a best before date of September 2024.
In its risk statement, the FSA said: “This product contains celery making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to celery.”
It also outlined the action taken by Co-op, explaining: “Co-op is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.
“These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product. Please see the attached notice.”
In its notice, Co-op said: “Product is being recalled due to product containing product different to the label which contains allergen celery which is not on the label.
“Return product to nearest Co-op store for a refund, or if you are self-isolating or shielding please contact our Customer Careline.”

Co-op recommended calling 0800 0686 727, or sending an email to [email protected].
The supermarket added: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
The FSA also shared its advice with customers, saying: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to celery, do not eat it.
“Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. You can contact Co-op’s customer care line on 0800 0686 727 or email them at [email protected].”
The FSA went on to explain what food recalls are more generally. It stated: “Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold.
“Then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).
“Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”
Co-op isn’t the only supermarket with an active food recall. Lidl has also issued a product recall in recent days.
The supermarket has recalled the Birchwood Two Breaded Katsu Kiev because it contains an ingredient not mentioned on the label.
The product contains milk, but this is not stated anywhere on its packaging. This is due to the fact the item has been mispacked with Garlic and Herb Chicken Kiev, which contains milk.
This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.
The product comes in a pack 260 grams in size and with a best before date of October 24, 2022.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) usually shares information about food recalls on its website, and the Lidl recall is no exception. In its risk statement, the organisation wrote: “This product may contain milk making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.”
