Arnold Schwarzenegger has revealed that he’s been forced to change the way he works out in order to preserve his knees.

At 71, most people aren’t even thinking of exercise, but the former bodybuilder is still hitting the weights.

Thankfully, weightlifting and training have come a long way from the days when the actor used to dominate competitions so he’s able to take advantage of novel innovations. But he regrets not having today’s machines available back in the day, and who doesn’t? (talking everything here)

“Squatting and all those kind of like heavy leg exercises, I can’t do anymore,” Arnold told Men’s Health. “My knees are shot. I have to protect my knees because I want to go skiing.

“The machines that you have today, I wish that I could have used them in addition to what I did, because they’re really amazing,” he said. “A guy like myself who had shoulder surgery, hip surgery, knee surgery — they can always find an exercise around the injury that I could do. So I cannot do dumbbell lateral raises anymore, but I can go and find the machine that does exactly the same thing and I have no pain.”

The seven-time Mr. Olympia has taken up cycling following the heart problem that saw him undergo open-heart surgery back in April.

“I do mostly bicycling, so that’s why I want to bicycle all over the world,” he revealed. “When I travel, I get around in the bicycle. When I go shopping or something, I go on the bicycle, because then you can exercise in the legs and you see the town in a totally different way.”

Schwarzenegger recently teamed up with LeBron James, Cindy Crawford and Lindsey Vonn to launch a line of supplements. Their company, Ladder, seeks to provide pertinent information, as well as life-changing products to subscribing customers.

“The idea is not to overwhelm people with these huge cans of protein, stuff they didn’t know what to do with, how many scoops to put in,” he says.

Given the all-star cast behind this, it seems like it would be totally worth giving Ladder‘s supplements a shot. Hopefully, they’ll develop something for sore knees too.
