She sees it, she likes it, she wants it, she got it.
Just after midnight on Friday, Ariana Grande dropped her new single “7 Rings” — a shameless ode to shopping and female friendship — along with an accompanying music video featuring plenty of champagne, chandeliers and over-the-top bling.
The track was inspired by the diamond friendship rings Grande, 25, purchased for herself and her six best friends (Courtney Chipolone, Njozma, Alexa Luria, Kaydence, Victoria Monét and Tayla Parx, all of whom appear in the new video) following her breakup with Pete Davidson.
“Me and my friends went to Tiffany’s together, just because we needed some retail therapy. You know how when you’re waiting at Tiffany’s they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring,” Grande told Billboard. “That’s why we have these, and that’s where the song idea came from.”
As the pop star sings: “Wearing a ring but ain’t gon’ be no Mrs. / Bought matching diamonds for six of my b—s / I’d rather spoil all my friends with riches / Think retail therapy my new addiction.”
Fittingly, Grande and her pals are dripping in jewelry in the clip, although not all of it is as high-priced as those titular rings: The Alessandra Rich crystal drop earrings the star wears in her space buns instead of on her ears, for instance, are currently on sale for $350, while her giant crystal hoop earrings from Lace by Tanaya are a relative steal at $90.
