Dermot Bannon and ace Interior Designer Suzie McAdam are looking for a disaster, or even three.

The TV architect has just joined up with the in-demand designer in a nationwide bid to find Ireland’s worst home design disasters –  and with the promise that a lucky few will have expert solutions provided for them to put those design disasters right.

The star of Room to Improve is appealing to home owners around the country to submit pictures of those home design problem spaces that you can’t ever get right. “I call them design disasters,” says Dermot. “So right now I’m looking for those people who have tried really hard to come up with solutions for their home but can not see the wood from the trees.”

Dermot and Suzie’s disaster appeal which launches today, will see the design duo judge the resulting entries and pick out the domestic design foibles they believe are most unbearable and most need solving.

Three successful candidates will be chosen to have their disaster discussed and issued with professional advice on how to solve it by our panel of experts at House 2109. The three chosen submissions will also see the home owners receive four free tickets to House 2019 worth €60. House is Ireland’s biggest annual home, interiors and design show and is hosted by the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent and

Dermot, who is known to get antsy on air about bad design, reckons that lack of storage is his own particular bugbear and spaces that lack storage really get on his wick. “Storage is a massive thing in Ireland. We don’t have enough of it. We have the good dining room and the good sitting room that we think we need but nowhere to put stuff like the schoolbags, gym gear, bikes,” he said.

For her part, Suzie is known to despair of spaces which look cold.  Through her consultancy work McAdam uses lighting and textures to provide relief. “For me, a house has to be functioning, welcoming and warm.”
