It’s World Cocktail Day today (May 13) and even though the UK is under lockdown, we can all still celebrate with some cocktails in our own homes. Martinis are a firm favourite in cocktail bars here in the UK, and can be served either with gin or vodka. Express.co.uk has rounded up some of the best recipes for a gin or vodka martini, including some slightly unconventional ones.

Classic dry martini

To make a classic martini at home, you need to start with the right equipment.

As 007 quite rightly points out, martinis are best served “shaken, not stirred”, so for optimum results you’ll need a shaker.

You’ll also need some ice to get your martini to the optimum temperature.

Ingredients:

60ml good quality gin
1 tbsp dry vermouth
One dash of orange bitters (optional)

To garnish: Olives on a toothpick, or a twist of lemon

Method:

Add all of your ingredients into your cocktail shaker with ice.

Shake the cocktail until well combined and cold (most people prefer an icy cold martini, but it’s really your preference).

Strain your martini into a cocktail glass and add your garnish.

Vodka martini

Martini traditionalists swear a martini should be made with gin.

Regardless, a number of people much prefer a vodka martini to a gin one.

A vodka martini is perfect served chilled at parties, or just at home in front of the TV after a long day.

Passion fruit martini

BBC Good Food has included a recipe for passion fruit martini on their website which is “bursting with zingy flavours”.

For a creative spin on a classic, you can also top this martini up with prosecco for a bit of fizz.

While martinis usually have quite a limited ingredient list, you may need to go shopping for this one.

Ingredients (serves 2):

2 ripe passion fruits, halved
60ml of vanilla vodka
30ml passoa
1 tbsp lime juice
1 tbsp sugar syrup
Prosecco, to serve

Method

Scoop the seeds from one of the passion fruits into the glass of a cocktail shaker.

Add the vodka, passoa, lime juice and sugar syrup, along with a handful of ice.

Shake the mix well, and then, strain into two martini glasses.

Top up the glasses with prosecco, then add half a passion fruit to each before serving immediately.
