The war of the Christmas adverts is well and truly on, but one stood out for a very different reason this year.

Iceland’s advert, featuring an animated orangutan showing a little girl his rainforest home is being destroyed, never made it to TV after it was banned for being ‘too political’.

When the advert was shared on Facebook on Friday, November 9, it went viral as people tried to help spread the important message about the damage palm oil plantations can do to rainforest habitats.

It’s since been watched by more than 50million people.

Now, Iceland are offering shoppers the chance to help raise money for an orangutan charity – and bag a cute orangutan of their own in the process.

The frozen food giant has launched an exclusive toy so fans of the advert can have a ‘Rang-tan’ in their bedroom this Christmas, just like the little girl from the advert.

The cuddly toys cost just £5 and all profits from sales are going towards supporting an orangutan charity helping to rehabilitate orphans.

Iceland’s intended Christmas advert featured the animated Rang-tan, an orphaned orangutan who tells the story of his forest being destroyed to make way for palm oil plantations.

After the advert was not cleared to be shown on TV, Iceland made the decision to release it on social media to raise awareness of the important issue of tropical deforestation.

To support the release of the film, Iceland is introducing these cuddly Rang-tans in stores across the country so shoppers can help support the rehabilitation of orphaned orangutans.

In April 2018 Iceland announced the removal of palm oil from all own-label food by the end of the year, a commitment celebrated by the Rang-tan video and now the launch of a toy.

Richard Walker, Managing Director at Iceland, said: “Our commitment to help protect the home of orangutans remains extremely close to our hearts.

"We are proud to be encouraging consumers to make more sustainable choices ahead of the Christmas season and although we were hugely disappointed by the decision not to clear our Christmas advert, we have been overwhelmed by the response from across the world.

“The Rang-tan character embodies the plight of all orangutans and it has been amazing to see how people have taken to him and his story and engaged on a scale we could never have anticipated.
