Demi Lovato has some new ink and it carries a very sentimental message.
On Wednesday the 26-year-old singer shared a photo of her new ankle tattoo on Instagram stories, which features a drawing of her late dog’s face with the words “Buddy was here.”
“Thank you @_dr_woo for the incredible portrait of my late angel buddy,” she wrote alongside the photo. “RIP @demisbuddy. I will love you and never forget you.”
Lovato got Buddy in December 2014 and shared the pup with her then-boyfriend actor Wilmer Valderrama. The Instagram account @DemisBuddy is still live and features 76 photos of the dog with Lovato and Valderrama, who are referred to as “mom” and “dad” in captions.
In 2015, Lovato shared the news that Buddy died. According to TMZ reports, the dog was mauled by a coyote in the backyard.
At the time, Lovato shared the sad news with fans on Twitter. “We are absolutely heartbroken to be writing this but Wilmer and I are devastated to inform you that we lost our little angel Buddy last Sunday,” she Tweeted.
“He was taken from us way too soon in a tragic accident and though I will never know why this had to happen, I do know that God only puts us through situations that we can handle so with that, together we are staying strong.”
She also wrote about the impact Buddy had on her and Valderrama’s life. “Buddy was loved by so many people and as small as he was, he made a huge impact in our lives,” she wrote. “He truly was human in a way and we were so blessed to have him in our lives.”
The couple dated for six years before their split in June 2016, but they’ve remained close friends ever since.
In July, Lovato suffered an overdose at her Hollywood Hills home and was hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai in L.A. immediately following. She remained in the hospital for nearly two weeks before being released to seek in-patient treatment.
Just one day after Lovato checked into the hospital, Valderrama, 39, was by her side. A source at the hospital told PEOPLE at the time that Valderrama rushed to Lovato’s side after initially being very “shocked” by his ex’s overdose.
A second source also told PEOPLE that he “spent hours at the hospital with Demi every day. He seems very concerned about her.”
The star returned to social media on Aug. 5 in a now-deleted post and shared an update on her health.
“I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet,” Lovato wrote. “I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well,” she added, before praising her fans for standing by her through the difficult time.”
“To my fans, I am forever grateful for all of your love and support throughout this past week and beyond. Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time,” Lovato said.
Over the weekend, the singer reached a significant milestone. On January 26 she celebrated six months of being substance-free by sharing a photo of her sobriety coin on Instagram stories and indulging in a Funfetti dessert from Susiecakes, which came with a note reading, “Happy 6 Mo. We are so f—ing proud of you.”
