In February, we celebrate love and romance on the 14th day of the month.
But did you know there’s another ‘holiday’ that people also celebrate during this month – and it occurs just one day earlier, on February 13.
This day is known as Galentine’s Day and it’s an unofficial holiday that was inspired by an episode of the sitcom Parks and Recreation from 2010.
Yes, that’s right, you have the wonderful Leslie Knope (a character on the show) to thank for this wonderful, empowering tradition.
During the episode, Leslie is seen assembling a group of her friends, showering them with gifts and taking them for brunch where they enjoy plates stacked high with waffles and syrup.
The term has gained traction over the last few years, with many people both single and in relationships, using the day as a special way to acknowledge their female friendships.
And despite not being recognised on most calendars, many companies have jumped on the popularity of Galentine’s Day and now offer various promotions to celebrate the occasion.
How Do I celebrate?
Only just learning about Galentine’s Day? Don’t worry! Celebrating February 13 is really easy to do.
It’s a lot like Valentine’s Day, only you don’t need to go and splash the cash on an expensive meal or jewellery.
All you need to do is hang our with your friends and have fun.
But if you feel like doing something a little more special, there are numerous events taking place across the UK to mark the day, including workout classes, dinners and various screenings nationwide at Everyman cinemas of girl power flicks like Legally Blonde and Mean Girls.
Poundland are also selling a brand new range of Galentine’s Day items to help make things a bit more festive, including balloons, banners, badges, flags and stickers.
