#SpeakingInDance | “Step adds a heartbeat to the story and propels the energy and the emotions that these characters are going through,” said @jondbeee of the percussive, full-bodied dance breaks that give Broadway’s #choirboy, produced by @mtc_nyc, an exhilarating jolt. An ensemble member and the show’s dance captain, Jonathan steps into the lead role of Pharus on February 26. For him, step “also represents the black experience in a real way.” The choreographer @camilleabrown deftly uses the tradition of step, popular with African-American fraternities and sororities. @octarell_again’s musical play focuses on a group of young students at an all-male prep school. The current Pharus, @jeremypope – who’s leaving to star in the Temptations musical “Ain’t Too Proud” – said Camille told them that the movement is in their bloodlines. “It feels strong, it feels powerful,” he told the @nytimes writer @giadk. “We dig deep into the ground.
