Heritage Auctions has just announced a new record for the most expensive first-edition Pokémon booster set sold. The box set from 1999 sees all 36 pristine boxed booster packs (396 cards) in unopened, shrinkwrap-sealed condition.

The previous record was set last year in February with an auction price of $78,000 USD, but this new sale more than doubles that. In fact, the pre-auction estimate of $80,000 USD was surpassed in the first few hours of advance bidding. As these Wizards of the Coast sets continue to gain value in the auction world Jesus Garcia, Assistant Comics & Comic Art Operations Supervisor at Heritage Auctions comments: “To see this result, more than doubling the previous mark, [this] just shows the popularity and demand for these cards show no sign of slowing down.”
