Simon Cowell explains why he has overhauled the X Factor after ‘losing sight of contestants’… and reveals he’s turned VEGAN ahead of 60th birthday

He previously revealed that this year’s X Factor is getting a celebrity make-over.

And X Factor boss Simon Cowell has now explained the reason behind his decision to overhaul the ITV stalwart in favour of a celebrity and all stars version.

The music mogul, 59, revealed that he felt the show was focusing too much on the ever-changing judging panel rather than the programme’s contestants.

Simon confessed that he had ‘lost sight of the contestants’ while spending time and money on trying to put together the best possible panel of judges.

Speaking about the judging panel costs, he said: ‘It was no secret it was millions and millions of pounds. I am going to be really honest with you – and this is no disrespect to Robbie or anyone else who has been on the panel – my focus this year is mainly about the people who are coming on the show to compete.

‘I’m probably talking myself out of a job here, but I think there has been so much emphasis on the judges.

‘We’ve lost sight of the contestants. It got crazy, I never thought this would happen 20 years ago, when I started this show, that we would be talking more about the judges than the contestants, it’s complete nonsense.

‘Somehow that’s the way it’s gone. So that’s why me and Rob were talking, and he could see where I was coming from. It’s about getting the right people to come on the show, that was it.’

Simon isn’t sure whether Louis Tomlinson would return to the panel this year but the music mogul would ‘respect’ his decision if he needed to take a break.

Simon’s decision to revamp the show isn’t the only big life change he has made in recent months, he has also made a huge dietary change following a heath scare.

The Syco boss fell on the stairs during the night in October 2017 and was rushed to hospital over fears he was leading an unhealthy lifestyle.

Simon has now cut out meat, dairy, wheat, sugar and will soon give up fish after being told he has ‘every food allergy’.

He has even managed to curb the booze and cigarettes to occasional treats rather than regular habits.

He told The Sun: ‘Within 24 hours I changed my diet and I’ve not looked back since. You feel better, you look better.

‘I cut out a lot of the stuff I shouldn’t have been eating and that was primarily meat, dairy, wheat, sugar — those were the four main things.’

He added: ‘I loved those comfort foods, that’s all I’ve eaten all my life. I love jam tarts, hamburgers, spaghetti Bolognese. I can eat fish but this year I will go the whole way.’
