Meghan Markle stepped out in an unexpected color scheme yesterday for her and Prince Harry’s visit to Birkenhead, an English town outside Liverpool. Although the Duchess of Sussex is prone to neutral color palettes and dark tones, she broke her streak with a bold red and purple look.

Duchess Meghan steered clear of prints and instead donned bright solids for a color-blocked feel. She layered a red wrap coat by Sentaler over a purple dress from Babaton by Aritzia, a tea-length number with a subtle thigh-high slit. For accessories, she went with Stuart Weitzman pumps that matched her coat and a brown leather Gabriela Hearst bag.

Decades earlier, in 1989, Meghan’s late mother-in-law sported the same color scheme during a royal visit to Hong Kong with Prince Charles. Princess Diana’s ensemble at the time consisted of a red and purple look by her go-to designer, Catherine Walker, with a matching wide-brim hat by Philip Somerville.

The following year, Princess Diana wore the outfit again to the 1990 Royal Ascot. She was accompanied by Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and Sarah Ferguson for the appearance.

She actually recycled the outfit again in 1992 for a solo visit to the Taj Mahal. She ditched the matching headpiece this time around.

As People points out, the late princess also wore the color scheme during a visit to Bangkok, Thailand in 1988, a year before her Hong Kong trip. The two-tone asymmetrical dress was also by Catherine Walker. Diana completed the ensemble with dangling pearl earrings and flowers in her hair.

This isn’t the first time the Duchess of Sussex’s wardrobe has brought Princess Di to mind. Meghan’s sequined black halter, leather skirt, blue and white sundress, and even her wedding veil were all reminiscent of the late royal’s style.
