A message appearing to show Gareth Gates scrounging for freebies for himself and fiancée Faye Brookes has been exposed on Twitter.

In the post the former Pop Idol winner asks a business owner if they can 'do anything' for him and Corrie actress Faye on their upcoming trip to Birmingham in return for social media posts.

Twitter user Conrad Brunton explained: "A friend who runs a great bar in Birmingham just received this message from Gareth Gates. I am sure that he’s contacted a few industry people with a similar request. What a d***** Come on mate, You and your Mrs (from Corrie) can’t be that hard up can you!!??? # freeloader."

He then shared a screenshot, appearing to be sent from Gareth's Instagram account, which read: "Hi, Gareth Gates here. My self and my fiancé (Faye Brookes from Coronation Street ) are in Birmingham on Saturday.

"We're looking for places to go and wondered if you could do anything for us in exchange for social media posts etc."

Mirror Online has contacted representatives for Gareth and Faye comment.

It comes just after Faye announced she will be leaving Coronation Street after four years on the soap.

Faye broke the news with a statement on Twitter which read: "Thanks to everyone for your amazing support, but after 4 fabulous years in Weatherfield it's time for me to explore new opportunities, I've loved playing Kate Connor, but she needs a break for a little while and so with a song in my heart I'm off to pastures new. #corrie."

The actress has appeared in the soap since 2015 as Kate Connor, who is best known for her relationship with Rana Habeeb, played by Bhavna Limbachia.

In a statement, Coronation Street said: "Faye is a very talented actress who has put her all into the portrayal of Kate Connor for the past three and a half years, we wish her every success for the future.

"She will be on screen until early autumn and the door will be left open."

Just weeks before Faye confirmed her exit, she said an interview with OK! magazine that she loved her job and had plenty more to offer the role.

The 31-year-old actress became the fifth star to quit the ITV soap in recent months, following her best friend Bhavna.

Speaking of Bhavna's decision to leave, Faye said: "I was gutted to hear she wanted to leave but I support her decision completely. She was really scared about telling me because we're both so invested in the characters, she said it felt like she was breaking up with me.

"I'll miss her but we're the best of friends and I've already seen her a couple of times since she left."

She went on to insist that Rana being killed off was the best way for that character to leave, "because there's no way she would ever have left without Kate".

"Death was the only realistic way for Bhavna to leave because I'm not going anywhere. I love my job and feel like I've only just begun to sink my teeth into Kate," Faye added
