Many Americans have fantasized about dropping everything and moving to another country, especially in this political climate. But let’s face it: It’s seldom that we put our money where our mouth is. Although fed up citizens may daydream about relocating, the idea isn’t as ludicrous when you are a celebrity with ample funds.
During the 2016 election, several famous faces vowed to leave the country if Donald Trump was elected president. Now that he has been in office for four years, however, many of these celebrities went back on their word and still reside in the United States.
But with the 2020 presidential election in the balance as we wait for all the votes to be counted as of Nov. 4, 2020, a whole new slew of stars have promised to leave the country if Trump is reelected. While some famous folk are at their wits’ end, others are determined to stay for the sake of their country.
“We just take it one day at a time and we’ve had plans like we might leave the country, but no. We have to stay here and we have to fight for our rights and what we believe,” “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer Ricky Martin told Variety about his family. “This is the moment. We all need to get together and be loud about the course of this nation.”

Bruce Springsteen and more stars are ready to move if Donald Trump gets four more years
Several stars have toyed with the idea of fleeing the country in the wake of political upset, but some seem pretty firm on their vows. Bruce Springsteen may have been “Born in the U.S.A.,” but he is ready to bounce if Donald Trump wins another four years in office. “If by some happenstance he should be [reelected], I’ll see you on the next plane,” he told The Daily Telegraph in October 2020, according to The Hill.
Tommy Lee is also ready to dip if Trump is reelected. ” … If that happens then I’m coming over to visit the U.K. I’m out of here. I’ll go back to my motherland, go back to Greece and get a house on one of the islands,” he told The Big Issue. “The thing that stings the most is that I feel like we’re embarrassing. I feel like people in Europe and the rest of the world look at America and think: ‘What the f*** are you guys doing over there? Stop voting for celebrities and get someone real to run the country.'”
Lee isn’t the only A-lister who is embarrassed by Trump’s actions. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen told Cosmopolitan U.K. they refuse to have a leader “who is trying to destroy democracy,” adding, “You’d have to think about going somewhere that is a true democracy, that has respect for the rule of law and human rights.”
Several stars who promised to relocate following Trump's presidency still live in the States
There may be some celebrities who are totally done with the Trump administration, but only time will tell if they will follow through, or perhaps, won’t have to flee at all. While they may seem set in their words now, Jon Stewart, Cher, Miley Cyrus, Samuel L. Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg and Snoop Dogg were all quite serious when they promised to leave if Trump became president in 2016 (via Page Six). Considering they all still reside in America, it’s fair to say they went back on their promises.
Chelsea Handler came close to following through on her word to leave in 2016, after she purchased a home in Spain. “I did buy a house in another country just in case, so all of these people that threaten to leave the country and then don’t; I will leave the country,” she said in an interview with Live With Kelly and Michael (via Fox News). Despite her intentions, she thought she should stay to fight for what she believes in. “It’s so easy to say throw in the towel and that we’re going to leave or I’m going to move to Spain, because I want to move to Spain,” she said on an episode of her show to Senator Barbara Boxer. “Everyone in my office is like, ‘You have a responsibility, you have a voice and you need to use it, and you have to be here.'”
