From Miley Cyrus setting the new shaggy mullet trend, to January Jones making a case for pink home-dye, celebrities started 2020 by serving some serious hair inspiration – and lockdown certainly isn’t going to stop that. In fact, with hairdressers now reopening across the UK, we’re all looking for a little hair inspiration again.
We can all agree that 2019 was the year of the blunt bob. Celebrities including January Jones, Fearne Cotton, Lucy Liu, Nicole Scherzinger and Jourdan Dunn all rocked the razor-sharp chop. Rihanna, Selena Gomez and Constance Wu proved it was a big year for bangs, too. And let’s not forget to give a shout out to the many colour transformations that took place, including Dua Lipa’s brunette-to-bleached locks and Maisie Williams’s rainbow of dyes.
So what has 2020 got in store for celebrity hair? Which styles and colours will we be showing photos of to our stylists when the salons reopen their doors? Let’s find out…
Celebrity hair inspiration 2020
Daisy Lowe, Emily Ratajkowski, Nicola Coughlan, Perrie Edwards, Michelle Keegan, Dua Lipa, Lupita Nyong’o, January Jones, Hilary Duff, Blake Lively, Miley Cyrus, Ricki Lake, Kerry Washingston and Barbie Ferreira have kickstarted the biggest trends with their new hair styles.
Model Daisy Lowe has just made a dreamy case for long hair by ditching the French bob that she recently sported and getting “mermaid” extensions put in.
She shared the before-and-after pictures on Instagram, captioning them: “So today I had the pleasure of getting my first set of @hairdreams_uk extensions by the magic handed @lewis_pallett – thank you for helping me feel like a mermaid again!”
Does this mark the end of the blunt bob trend?
Known for her long, dark brunette hair, model and actor Emily Ratajkowski has just dyed it blonde. Sharing videos of the beautiful results on Instagram, she thanked Kerastase who made the colour change happen as part of a paid partnership.
Speaking about it, Ratajkowski said: “I’ve never coloured my hair or changed the length significantly in my entire life. I just celebrated my birthday and am so happy to be coming out of quarantine with a fresh new look. Beauty is meant to be fun and expressive and this is definitely, hands down, the most fun I’ve ever had with my look before.”
For anyone who’s looking to made a bold hair move at the first hair appointment in months, it’s provides some colourful inspiration.
With all hair appointments banned over the last two months, lockdown has seen a lot of us reach for the home-dye kit (the
Stylist beauty team has all the advice you need on how to safely dye your hair at home). It’s been a time for us to get creative, even if things don’t always turn out exactly as planned. Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan is the latest celebrity to brighten up lockdown with a home-dye job – and we’re very into it. The actor dyed her hair baby pink for a fancy dress Zoom quiz, which she chose to dress up as Saoirse Ronan’s character in Lady Bird for. Coughlan even made a pink cast for her arm to complete the costume.
And it paid off, because Beanie FeldStein – who of course starred alongside Ronan in
Lady Bird – commented with crying emojis.
Coughlan also later tweeted about the look, writing: “OK so pink hair makes me feel like I’m a mysterious Nordic singer who’s going to drop a sad, but also banging pop-synth album that’s going to get you though your breakup. Also I might solve crime on Fjords.”
Pink hair sounds just as fun as it looks.
First, she cut her hair into a bob with bangs during lockdown, now Perrie Edwards is using it as a chance to experiment with different hair looks. The Little Mix singer previously tried TikTok’s viral bathrobe curls but after her cousin Ellie (who is isolating with her) told her they’d done it wrong, they tried again.
When Perrie unravelled her hair, she was left with tight curls, telling the camera, “So I might have over-curled my hair”.
After brushing it out and trying various styles, Edwards settled on pushing her hair back with an orange hairband. It certainly suits her.
Michelle Keegan Our Girl actor Michelle Keegan has perfectly illustrated a quarantine hair mood by sharing a photograph of her voluminous natural curls.
She captioned the photo: “Back to basics.” Anyone who is embracing the kink during isolation right now will relate.
It comes after Ariana Grande shared a photo of her own quarantine curls (which she has since taken down from Instagram).
Dua Lipa is known for her sharp hair styles, usually worn in a centre parting or with a blunt fringe. But while she performed a
Late Late Show performance with her band on a video called, Lipa gave some serious “staying home while social distancing” hair vibes by sweeping her fringe to the side and tying her hair in a knot. Lupita Nyong’o
Lupita Nyong’o celebrated her 37th birthday in February by throwing one heck of a party in Lagos. And she marked the occasion with what’s sure to be an iconic beauty look for the actor – braided bangs. Nyong’o wore her beads in a top knot and embellished her fringe with some gold beads. Sharing a photo on Instagram, she wrote: “This is 37. #FeelingTheLove.” Another shot showed the actor wearing her braids under an electric blue head wrap, which she described as “Lagos slay queen“.
Known for usually keeping her hair long and blonde, actor January Jones got the chop in 2019 and proved herself to be the undisputed Queen of Blunt Bobs.
Now, she’s decided to give her blunt bob a little twist of colour – and it’s the perfect mix of cool and cute.
“Just gave myself some pink highlights, rather impressed with myself tbh,” she wrote alongside a photograph of her freshly coloured hair.
She might just have kicked off the DIY colour highlights trend…
Blake lively at the Rhythm Section premiere.
In her new film
The Rhythm Section, Blake Lively wears her hair in a variety of dramatic disguises. At one point, she even has a bowl cut. And it looks like the actor has been inspired by the role.
Lively is best known for the long, golden blonde hair she has had since her
Gossip Girl days. But at The Rhythm Section premiere, Lively embraced a darker side with natural roots, worn in an up-do.
Wearing a long, black velvet dress and gloves, it was a look full of drama and intrigue. Perhaps we won’t be rushing to get our roots touched up after all.
Last year, Hilary Duff opted to get married with a straight, sharp ‘lob’ to match her modern Jenny Packham gown. Like many others, the long bob was her signature style of 2019. But now the actor has gone to new lengths, literally.
Duff shared a photograph of her longer, wavy style on Instagram. She heavily hinted that the new look was down to extensions from her stylist Riawna Capri.
She captioned the photo: “Whoa @riawna how’d you make my hair grow like this over night??? Cool trick cool trick.”
Not one to shy away from a bold hair and makeup look,
Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira has debuted a mullet with serious attitude. Although she sported a longer mullet at the end of last year, the actor has now gone with a shorter and shaggier style. Her stylist, Laura Heaps, who took four-inches off the length, told Elite Daily: “We looked through at a lot of pictures together and then just created this vision of a modern mullet.” It’s as easy as that… Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus brought in the new year with a shaggy mullet, and we are feeling its seriously 70s punk vibes. The cut is a far cry from the favoured blunt bob, with its tousled fringe and natural finish. Cyrus uploaded the new look on her Instagram, writing: “New hair. New Year. NEW MUSIC.” Will the mullet make a proper comeback in 2020?
TV legend Ricki Lake has shared a photo of her newly shaved head, revealing the very relatable reason behind doing it. Lake revealed that she has been living with hair loss on and off for almost 30 years. “I am not alone in this and my goal is to help others while at the same time unshackle myself from this quiet hell I have been living in,” she said. It’s inspiring. It’s bold. It’s liberating.
Hair chameleon Kerry Washington has worn her hair in natural curls, long braids and a sleek mid-style over recent months. She even had a pixie cut at one point. But Washington proved that the long bob – or ‘the lob’ – isn’t going anywhere in 2020. Stepping out on the Golden Globes carpet, she showed off a newly cut shoulder-skimming do, with a deep side parting and sweeping fringe.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for the best styles that celebrities will inevitably continue to debut over the coming months.
