Iggy Azalea just dropped her new single “Sally Walker” with a very cinematic video. The video — shot as well as any movie short — centers on the death and funeral of the title’s “little Sally Walker,” and it is loaded with twerking, dancers in stripper gear, drag queens and choreographed step-dancing.
It honestly looks and sounds like the first musical offering that Iggy has actually cared about in years. But we would not be shocked if, after hearing the track and seeing the video, some might still say that Iggy’s act has simply migrated from seeming a bit derivative of Nicki Minaj to now seeming a bit derivative of Cardi B.
That transformation, itself, is interesting to watch. However, others might say that, Cardi B influences aside, this may be the least derivative, least overproduced, and most self-assured that Iggy has ever sounded in her career.
Joining Iggy in the video are former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants Miss Vanjie, Mayhem Miller and Shea Coulee. “Sally Walker” is the first track to be released from Iggy’s upcoming album In My Defense, which will be Iggy’s first full length album since The New Classic back in 2014. The album is also her first with her new record label, Empire. A release date for In My Defense has not yet been set.
