Cheryl did her best to bounce back from a month from hell at London’s exclusive Mayfair Hotel, where she attended a red carpet photocall for new BBC talent show The Greatest Dancer.
But she might have been trying just a shade too hard, in a shiny satin mini dress that seemed to be trying to be all things to all women.
The frock’s thigh-skimming length flattered the Geordie star’s perfect pins, and the dress’s cut out detail revealed an enticing expanse of her perfectly-toned back but a loose tie at the throat combined with a billowing bishop sleeve was a detail too far.
Greatest Dancer colleague Oti Mabuse dazzled in a pair of sparkly thigh-high boots that made it feels as if Christmas had come early while Glee star Matthew Morrison dressed down in double-denim and a leather jacket.
Cheryl is pushing hard to rebuild her profile right now after a lacklustre reaction to the lead single from her new album and the collapse of he lucrative association with cosmetics giant L’Oréal.
She first started working with the brand nine years ago when she was an X-Factor judge and riding a wave of popular sympathy over the breakdown of her marriage with footballer Ashley Cole.
This year, however, has seen a marked decline in her fortunes with savage reactions to her comeback performance on X Factor – in particular her dance routine was described as being "too sexual" for a family show.
X-factor supremo Simon Cowell was seen pointing towards Cheryl with a slightly confused look on his face as her song ended.
And speaking on ITV’s This Morning, he revealed what he was thinking, saying : "Well I thought she was dead at the end, actually.”
Cheryl reacted angrily to the criticism, tweeting "I did watch my performance back and I LOVED IT!”
